The Southeast Alaska Landslide Information Preparedness Partnership workshop focused on understanding landslide risks across the region. The event, held in Sitka, brought together experts from various agencies and communities to discuss the complex factors contributing to landslides, including rainfall patterns, soil composition, and topography. Presenters from the National Weather Service, University of Oregon, and other organizations shared insights on forecasting extreme weather events, mapping landslide-prone areas, and developing tools to improve situational awareness. Participants explored how to integrate scientific data with community knowledge to enhance preparedness and response efforts. The workshop emphasized the importance of collaboration between agencies, tribes, and local governments to address the growing challenges posed by landslides in Southeast Alaska.

Alaska Municipal League
AML is a statewide organization representing Alaska’s 165 cities and boroughs, with a mission to strengthen local governments and improve the condition of Alaska’s communities. AML’s organizational structure includes dedicated teams responsible for municipal planning, capital improvement, and community development, supported by a strategic services model that focuses on effective municipal operations.
Through its SIMPLE (Strategic Integrated Municipal Planning for Local Effectiveness) Program, AML offers tailored, cost-effective support for community planning that reflects local priorities and needs. SIMPLE is a shared service designed to strengthen planning and capacity support across AML’s municipal members, and extended to other community partners.
AML members are navigating a wide range of complex planning needs—from comprehensive and long-range transportation plans to housing, hazard mitigation, resilience, and beyond. SIMPLE offers on-demand services tailored to each community’s unique needs, ensuring that no municipality has to face these planning challenges alone. SIMPLE is more than just a service; it’s a commitment to strengthening local governments with the knowledge, tools, and support to tackle their most pressing challenges.
